Sean Carroll《宇宙盡頭的粒子--尋找希格斯粒子如何把我們帶進一個新世界的邊緣》

Abstract

The Standard Model of Particle Physics is the crowning jewel and the cumulation of work of thousands of physicists since advent of relativity and quantum mechanics in the 20th century. The Standard Model offers remarkable insight into the fundamental structure of matter: everything in the known observable universe is made up of a few basic building blocks of elementary matter particles and governed by four fundamental forces of nature. Professor Carroll’s book offers a lucid account of the search the Higgs Particle, the last missing piece of this cosmic jigsaw puzzle, the theory behind the Standard Model and how the world largest conglomeration of top scientists using the largest machine ever built by humans finally solved this difficult infinity puzzle. The speaker Mr Edwin Ginn is a retired meteorologists with contributions to climate change, weather radars and many other areas during his long service with the Hong Kong Observatory. He finds the subject fascinating and would like to share with the audience his own quest in understanding the intricacies of the Standard Model of Particle Physics and importance and significance of the Higgs Boson through the reading of Prof Carroll’s excellent account and other books on the subject.
